Places to visit near Whitby?

The Jackal (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 27th March 2008, 10:06

We are off to Grosmont, Whitby, North Yorkshire for a week at the end of May. We plan to spend 1 day in York and I am sure we will visit Whitby again for fish and chips. ;)

Does anyone know of any good places to visit for the day? We have done Goathland the Heartbeat Village as it is a very pleasant 2 hour walk from where we stay. I am thinking more of zoos or theme parks for the 4 kids (16, 13, 6, and 5). Someone at work mentioned a Viking museum or something.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

[edit] Just found Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo Kirby Misperton, Malton, North Yorkshire. Anyone been?

There`s the viking museum in york city centre, not been myself.

We went to York last year, popped over to whitby a couple of times (Robin Hood bay is down the road and quite nice) and visited york for the day, rest of the time was spent lounging in the hot tub I`m afraid...

Yep the Viking Museum is in the Centre of York!
If u or the kids r into trains we also have The National Railway Museum which I believe is free to get into 99.9% of the time!

Scarborough`s just down the road - traditional seaside holiday town with parks, amusements, beaches, miniature railway, boating lake etc.

It`s years since we took our kids to Flamingo Land & I know it has changed quite a lot. It used to be 80% zoo & 20% theme park, but I`ve heard that the balance has switched the other way to about 60% theme park now.

Robin Hood`s Bay is very picturesque, but would only be a 1/2 day.

Whitby itself has the Dracula Experience; the coastal footpath to Boggle Hole is a good walk; Staithes and Runswick Bay are very picturesque - I have very fond memories of staying near the latter as a child - and the North York Moors have the steam railway. It`s a great area of the country to visit,

Elvington Airfield just outside of York is worth a visit, to go and look at all the old aircraft in their museum.

Do yourself a favour and stay well clear of the Dracula experience, if you feel tempted just throw your money into the sea, believe me, you will enjoy that far more than the experience of plastic vampires unrealistic waxworks and and `experience` that lasts about 5 minutes before your thrown out of the back door into the street lol

Lots to do in and around Whitby, you have Robin Hoods bay (nice walk down the hill to a nice chippy...very steep walk back to walk em off again) Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey are pretty close as Mr Beckett said, boggle hole is a nice walk, (its nicer than the name suggests lol) I used to go to Flamingoland a lot as a kid, not been for years though, likewise with Lightwater Valley (near Ripon) neither are up to Alton towers standards but ok I suppose, of the two Id prolly go for Flamingoland as it has the zoo. but if you head out that way (Lightwater Valley) Id suggest a trip to the Black Sheep brewery in Masham :D If your into walking and its a nice day there are some nice walks thru Dalby Forest

Thanks peeps. Lots to look into there.

I really am looking forward to it. This has now become our yearly holiday. Not been over seas for 2 years now.

Hopefully I will get a weekend away with the guys again this year. ;)
